The Waterfalls of Pike County PA
There are many majestic waterfalls all along the Delaware Water Gap as the Delaware River’s many tributaries make their way from their source to their mouth. While doing so, they must fall with the decline in elevation as they exit the Pocono Mountains, thus creating many spectacular places to see water cascading from higher points to lower pools. All of us at The Settlers Inn love the wild beauty that surrounds our tranquil haven and want to share the unique and ancient splendor of these woods with our guests.
Pike County PA is just a stone’s throw from us here in Hawley PA and it is home to some spectacular waterfalls. At Dingmans Falls there are two waterfalls one can observe – Dingmans Falls and Silverthread Falls. Dingmans Falls is the second tallest waterfall in Pennsylvania and Silverthread Falls is so named because it is narrow and looks like a single glimmering silver thread emerging from the Earth. Be prepared to get wet at these waterfalls if you want to walk the entire boardwalk surrounding them. ” In heavy spring runoff, there is no way to get to the end of the boardwalk without getting drenched by spray.
If one is going to see the second tallest falls in the state, one may as well travel just a little further to see the incredible Raymondskill Falls, the tallest falls in the state. Measuring only four feet shorter than Niagara Falls, Raymondskill Falls is a breathtaking scene of rushing water, deep woods, and primeval sandstone. While heading toward the falls, one will see a large base of a structure that used to be the Hotel Schanno. Built in 1892, the hotel was once quite a tourist attraction, but it burned in 1990 and the mound is all that remains.
Finally, if one is still longing for more waterfall sightseeing, stop by Shohola Falls. Here, there are many hiking trails and a few striking observation points to take in the view. Surrounded by a mixture hemlocks, cliffs, mountains, and meadows, Shohola Falls is a great way to end a day of waterfall viewing in Pike County PA.
At the end of the day, one can make his or her way back here to The Settlers Inn for a rejuvenating dinner, refreshing drinks, and a restful night’s slumber.
