106 Years and Counting: The Greene Dreher Sterling Fair
Animal exhibits, fun food, rides and more can all be found at this year’s Greene Dreher Sterling Fair. Since 1917, visitors have been making their way to Newfoundland, PA to enjoy this spectacular fair. This year’s fair will take place from August 25th through September 3rd so be sure to make your plans now to attend. Celebrating its 106th year, you know this year’s fair is going to be an event to remember for the entire family.
The Greene-Dreher-Sterling Fair began back in 1917 by a school teacher as a way to promote her students work. Ella Nevin’s goal was to promote the agricultural lifestyle and educate the surrounding community about farm life and the valuable skills that can be utilized in everyday living. Over the years, this event has grown to include everything from music to exhibits for visitors to enjoy.
At this year’s fair, the schedule is out and there’s plenty to do. There will be a barn to meet and greet animals, garden tractor pulls, a pig show, a milking contest, a turkey calling contest and a dog show. Kids of all ages will enjoy the Power Wheels Derby, pie eating contest, kid’s pedal pull, animal dress up, frog jumping contest, and a performance by the Wallenpaupack High School Marching Band. Shows to be seen this year include the Jesse Wade Gang Country Music Outlaws, the Western Wayne Band, Back Woods Band, McWilliams Band, and a performance by magician Matt Episcopo. Also be sure to watch the baby pageant, Demolition Derby, ice carving demonstrations and the 1st annual car, truck, and bike show. Lastly, there will be the annual Fair Queen Competition. The competition is open to girls living in Wayne or Pike Counties and between the ages of 16 and 20. The winning queen will be required to attend several appearances and act as a Goodwill Ambassador for the Fair. This event will take place on Friday, August 28th at 7:00 pm.
There are many different ticket options for this year’s fair. Monday through Thursday, tickets are $5.00. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday tickets are $8.00. There will be a Senior Citizen Day on Thursday, September 3rd for those ages 65 and over with tickets just $3.00 until 5:00 pm.
