Hiking with your dog is a great way to get out, get fit, and explore the outdoors with your furry friend. Pennsylvania is home to many dog-friendly trails, and many of these trails are close to us here at The Settlers Inn. We have a few recommendations of the most dog-friendly trails in the Poconos to get you started.

Bingham Park
Start your journey right outside our door with a walk with your dog to Bingham Park along the Riverwalk trail. You might also like hiking the 2.1 miles of trails along Lake Wallenpaupack. We are glad to point you in the right direction to the trailhead and then you’ll be on your way! Don’t forget to grab a walking stick from the porch and pack a picnic lunch to take along with you.
Shuman Point Natural Area
Another great area close to Lake Wallenpaupack is the Shuman Point Natural Area. Dogs on a leash can join you on this 3-mile loop hike. All skill levels are welcome and the trail offers hikers great views overlooking the lake and also of the forest landscape. About 2 miles into the hike, you will find stone walls that used to act as a fence to separate the farmers’ fields.
Promised Land State Park
Just a short drive from the inn is Promised Land State Park. The park is located in Greentown, PA, and offers hikers more than 50 miles of trails. Dogs on a leash can join their owner on the park’s Little Falls Trail. The 1.4-mile trail follows Wallenpaupack Creek and past the little falls for which the trail is named.
Lehigh Gorge State Park Trail
The Lehigh Gorge State Park Trail is great for dogs with its wide paths and river views. The entire trail runs for 26 miles but a shorter version can be started in Rockport. The trail is worth the work as the trail is a bit steep at times. Be sure to find your way to the abandoned rail tunnel that opens up to views of the river. This is a beautiful hike to take with your puppy.
Ledgedale Recreation Area
The Ledgedale Recreation Area in Greentown, PA offers hikers a 35-acre park and an 80-acre natural area. You and your dog will enjoy the trails in the natural area that follow the old logging trails used in the 20th century. There are beautiful trees to see, an abundance of wildlife and plenty of birds for bird watching. This gorgeous area is located just 15 miles south of Hawley, so it’s perfect for a day trip.
