Where is Hawley PA and Why Should I Visit?

The charming, small town of Hawley, Pennsylvania is less than 100 miles from New York City and under 150 miles from Philadelphia. So, where is Hawley, PA  exactly? The small borough is nestled in the Pocono Mountains at the northernmost end of Lake Wallenpaupack in Wayne County. Founded in 1827, the town is steeped in history. Its namesake, Irad Hawley,was the first president of the Pennsylvania Coal Company. There are countless reasons to visit Hawley. Here are just a few of our favorites.Hawley Silk Mill

History

Century-old buildings populate much of the town. Nearby museums preserve the area’s rich history. Antique shops and specialty stores create a vibrant and quaint Main Street. The Hawley Silk Mill is on the National Register of Historic Places. This building, which was once a thriving silk mill, is the largest Bluestone Building in the world. Built in 1880, the former factory was repurposed and now houses shops, an art gallery, event space, professional offices and a fitness center. Cocoon Coffee House and Bakery, just outside the Hawley Silk Mill, is a cozy spot to recharge with a cup of coffee and gourmet treat while touring the town.

Recreation

Hawley is Lake Wallenpaupack’s hometown. The second largest lake in Pennsylvania features 52 miles of shoreline. There are four seasons of outdoor recreation including kayaking, fishing, swimming, plenty of walking trails, boat rides and rentals. For a different way to get around town, park the car and check out the Hawley Bike Share Program. The Hawley Trail crosses the grounds of The Inn and traverses the Lackawaxen River. Walk along the towpath on the property past remnants of the D & H Canal. Connect to Lock 31 Trail in Canal Park at one end and trails in Bingham Park on the other. Interpretive signs along the way tell of Hawley’s history, growth and natural resources.

Culture

For entertainment when visiting the area, check out The Ritz Company Playhouse. This theatre, which opened in 1973, is a popular destination for tourists visiting Hawley. Live performances are staged from June through September. The season includes musicals, comedies and a Christmas performance during Hawley Winterfest.

Hawley is a popular enclave for established and emerging artists. Looking Glass Art Gallery showcases work by renowned local and internationally acclaimed artists. Wayne County Arts Alliance is a society of local artists that regularly holds events to exhibit the work of its members. An Artists’ Studio Tour is held each summer, which offers and up close and personal visit to the work spaces of Wayne County’s talented artists.

Just four miles down the road in White Mills, the Wildflower Music Festival hosts world-class musicians and award-winning performers. The outdoor concert series runs every summer on the grounds of Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary.
