Explore the Delaware Water Gap
There is nothing in the world like New York City! Skyscrapers, taxi cabs, subways, business meetings, loud and busy streets, millions of people… In one sense, New York City can be wonderful and in another, it’s draining and burdensome. In order to maintain one’s mental, emotional, and physical health, planned trips to wide open spaces are vital to the spirit and medicinal to the soul. That’s why we cordially invite our New York City friends to come meet us in the Pocono Mountains at The Settlers Inn! Trust us, our ancient hills have what you need to re-center your wellbeing and bring you “back to life”. In fact, your rejuvenation journey can begin before you even reach our Inn in Hawley. On your way to our beautiful and historic Inn, stop and enjoy some time along the Delaware Water Gap.
Regardless of whether you decide to get to our Inn via I-80 or I-84, both routes lead to the Delaware Water Gap National Park. If you’re traveling during the spring, summer, or autumn months, be sure to spend a few hours paddling down the river. Using a canoe, kayak, tube, or raft, you and your family and friends can spend some time seeing some of Mother Nature’s grandest work as you ease your way down the river. Companies like Kittatinny Canoes (specifically at Dingman’s Ferry) or Chamberlain Canoes cater to individuals and groups alike by providing equipment and a livery service either to the entry point or back from the stopping point. Unlike the upper Delaware River, the water through the National Park is relatively peaceful and experiences only class 1, and perhaps class 2 rapids, depending on the water level.
If you’re not in the mood to get wet, bicycling is another fantastic way to get out of the car and get active on the way to The Settlers Inn and enjoy the beautiful Delaware Water Gap. Either bring your own bike or rent one and slowly cycle your way along scenic Old Mine Road on the New Jersey side of the river or trail bike (if you have a mountain or hybrid bike) along the 32 mile McDade Trail in Pennsylvania. Bicycling is a peaceful and fun way to view the park.
Perhaps you’re the type of person who loves the beauty of nature, but would prefer to view it all from the comfort of an air conditioned or heated (depending on the time of year) vehicle. We understand that and fortunately, the Delaware Water Gap can be easily seen and enjoyed via car. Places like Point of Gap Overlook, Buttermilk Falls, and Millbrook Village are just a few of the points of interest that are vehicle accessible!
Whatever your preferences are, if you’re traveling to The Settlers Inn from New York City, you really must stop along the way and marvel at America’s historic Delaware Water Gap. Its clean air, majestic trees, and sparkling water are truly spectacular and are not to be missed. Let the Delaware Water Gap minister to your soul.
